Cambodia

Cambodia is one of Asia's 'Children of Pain'. A country rich in natural diversity, with an amazing cultural history and charm. But the country has many scars on its soul, because in all this magnificent scenery lives the Cambodian people, who still struggle daily to survive and forget the bloody past of the Khymer Rouge army under Pol Pot's leadership. Cambodia is an exciting country to travel in, as there is a sense of lawlessness. But with a mix of this condition and Cambodian hospitality, everyone is welcomed with shy smiles and curious warmth. Cambodia is part of what used to be called Indochina. Cambodia's neighbours are Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the north and Vietnam to the east. The southern border is a long stretch of coastline towards the Gulf of Thailand. Area: The country covers 181,035 km2, consisting of both highlands with mountains and lowlands with rice fields and rivers. Cambodia is cut by two rivers: Tongle Sap and Mekong. Both rivers run through the capital Phnom Penh. Tongle Sap, on its way to the delta in the south, forms Cambodia's largest lake, which spreads from Siem Riep and 150 kilometres south towards Phnom Penh. The Mekong, which originates in Tibet, runs almost 500 kilometres through Cambodia and flows into Vietnam south of Ho Chi Minh City.
