Essaouira sights

3 hours by bus from Agadir is Essaouira. The local bus is an experience and costs 60 dirhams per person. You have to hurry to board as the bus fills up quickly. The last passengers are placed on the floor of the aisle and lie between the back seat and the rear window. Old men are stuffed behind the back seat so that they are squashed up against the rear window. One was so badly off his feet that he almost never got out again. It costs to get your luggage on the bus - at least for tourists. The stretch from Agadir to Essaouira is a bit mountainous, there were a lot of people throwing up. Just around us there were 4 people throwing up. The heat in the bus didn't make people any healthier, so many locals sat with a bag in front of them. But the 2 Danish tourists were fine. The bus station in Essaouria is within walking distance of the old town, where the medina is also located. The old town has everything you could wish for. It's close to the sea and the medina is full of hotels, restaurants and shops. The medina is an area with shops - a large market. The streets are narrow and there are many of them. A real labyrinth where many get lost. Mellah is the Jewish quarter in a medina. There used to be many Jews in Morocco, but most of them now live in the US or Israel. The remaining Jews are proud of their religion and like to have the Star of David on their front door. The beach is popular with surfers and people playing with kites. The water is not calm due to the wind, so it's not a good beach where people come to sunbathe and swim. In the old days, the color purple was worth more than gold. Purple could only be mined in Essaouira, which had certain snails that could be used to produce the color. Purple was so popular that it was reserved only for royal robes. When something is so valuable, there is often a war to get it. The wrong people used the color, which resulted in a murder - the world's leading fashion victim, or violet turned to violence. Several restaurants offer a 3 course menu. Look around as prices vary a lot. We had salad for starters, couscous/tajine and Moroccan sour pudding for dessert. We also know couscous in Denmark. Tajine is a stew served piping hot on a plate with a cone-shaped lid that retains heat. We had tajine with lamb meat in tomato sauce. It only cost 50 dirham per person and tasted really good.
