Old Town in Sacramento

The weather was incredibly hot, around 45 degrees Celsius! So we had to find something a bit less strenuous to do! Just before you reach Sacramento, there’s a lake called Folsom Lake. It’s not as famous as Lake Tahoe, but it’s there! The water isn’t exactly crystal clear, but there’s a bit of a beach to enjoy. Around noon, we headed to a water park. We had to pay about $21 for the entrance ticket. We think it’s a bit crazy that a day pass costs so much when you can get a season pass for around $60-70. The water park at SunSplash is quite similar to the lovely one we found in Palm Springs. There’s a huge wave pool, countless water slides, and an arcade right next to the water park, which made for an awesome afternoon! SunSplash is conveniently located right off Highway 5. In the evening, we drove the last stretch into downtown Sacramento. We found a centrally located motel, although it was a bit pricier. We spotted an ad for Travelodge in a coupon booklet that brought the price down to about $50, which is a fair deal for staying in the heart of a big city! The woman at the motel reception emphasized that their breakfast was especially better than other places… Later that evening, we went sightseeing in Sacramento—Old Town and the river. Old Town was a slum area back in the early 1960s, but it’s now transformed into a living museum with saloons, wooden sidewalks, gas lamps, and a couple of paddle steamers by the river. You almost feel like you’ve stepped back into the 1800s!
