We have booked a trip to Machu Picchu from home to make sure we can hike the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu. We have chosen this company, which has received good recommendations: http://www.sastravelperu.com/. SAS is known for organizing professional tours where the employees are supposed to be well paid - but this also means that we pay a lot for the trip. 540 usd per person. There are major problems with porters being paid paltry wages, almost no food and some having to sleep directly on the ground without a tent or sleeping bag. By choosing SAS, we want to support good and responsible tourism in Peru without anyone suffering and being exploited. You can rent a sleeping bag and trekking pole from SAS if you don't have them yourself. We got the trekking pole for free. We brought the sleeping bag from home. SAS provides water during the trip. Every day they boil water that we can fill our bottles with. Sleeping pads are provided free of charge by SAS. Otherwise, it's a good idea to bring rainwear as the weather changes frequently. A hat with a wide brim and plenty of sunscreen as we're high up. Even if it's cloudy, the sun is harsh. Warm clothes for the night. Good hiking boots - it almost goes without saying. First aid kit. Headlamp or flashlight. Snacks and energy bars are always good to have. You have to carry all your own stuff. Porters only take tents and food. However, you can get your own porter if you don't want to carry your own luggage - but it costs 50 S per day. We have met several people who have taken the Inca Trail several times. They love the trip. Others think it's a bit boring. We look forward to finding out what we think :o) The person who completed the Inca Trail the fastest took the whole trail in 3.5 hours. It's really a great achievement and you have to take your hat off to them. We have to do the same distance in 4 days. The Inca Trail is 46 km long and crosses 3 mountains, the highest of which is 4200 m and is called Dead Woman's Pass.
