We were on our way to the game that had been recommended to us the day before. We were both excited to enjoy a traditional American afternoon. Finding the stadium was a breeze. Once inside, we managed to snag a couple of free T-shirts with San Diego's baseball logo, Padres. Today, the Padres were playing against the San Francisco Giants. We found our seats, and it was just like in the movies, with vendors walking around selling hot dogs, candy, and drinks. The players were warming up while their many fans shouted for autographs or a ball. Quite a few young fans actually succeeded in getting something signed. We arrived at the baseball game with very few expectations, meaning we knew absolutely nothing about the rules of the game. Now we know that a game has 9 innings and can last up to 5 hours. We watched the first 3 innings, which took about 2 hours. We sat under the blazing California sun, waiting for highlights for those 2 hours. But honestly, there’s not much excitement, at least not for a couple of Danes used to watching soccer. Baseball is a very slow sport, so after 2 hours, we decided to leave, feeling pretty hot and bothered from sitting in the sun. We drove downtown San Diego, where we found a motel, Harbourview, to stay at for the night. In the evening, we headed down to Little Italy, where we met two American men with roots in Denmark. We had a long chat about Danish societal issues versus American ones. It was incredibly entertaining to hear their ancestors’ stories about how and why they came to the USA. They seemed to feel that because we are Danish and share a history with them, they could trust us, as they gave us their phone numbers in case we ever needed a place to stay in the USA or found ourselves in trouble.
