Tunisia in Week 7
A one-week Tunisian road trip from Monastir and Tunis to camel rides in the Sahara and the surreal salt flats of Chott el Jerid.
During winter vacation we spent a week on a road trip in Tunisia. We rented a car and drove from north to south. Northwards We started at Monastir and visited Sousse and Tunis. Sidi Bou Said by the sea with blue and white houses reminds of Santorini in Greece. In the towns we met many locals who spoke Danish from when Tunisia was full of Danish tourists. South to the Sahara We drove to the desert town of Douz - the gateway to the Sahara. From here we went camel trekking in the desert and drove by jeep further into the Sahara sandbox. We also visited Chott el Jerid, Tunisia's vast salt desert. A fascinating lunar landscape with mirage. Tunisia was cheap. Luxury hotels for $550 a night for four people, dinner at a local restaurant for $60 total, and gas for $5 a liter. The temperature was 17-24 degrees with plenty of sunshine.
