Vulkanbestigning - Hallasan

There are 4 routes to the top of South Korea's highest peak, the Hallasan volcano. 2 of the routes go all the way to the top called Baekrokdam. The other 2 stop earlier to allow the vegetation to grow better. Whichever tour you choose, it can be done without a guide. The Gwaneumsa route offers the best views and takes you all the way to the top. Each way is 8.7 km and takes 9 hours in total. The Seongpanak route is the longest and the ascent is the least steep. This route also takes you all the way to the top. Each way is 9.6 km and takes 9 hours in total. The Eorimok route is the most popular ascent as it can be combined with taking the Yeomgsil route down. Unfortunately, the route does not take you all the way to the top. Each way is 4.7 km and takes 2.5 hours in total. The Yeongsil route is the shortest of all 4 routes. It's easy to combine with Eorimok if you don't want to do the same hike twice. Each way is 3.7 km and takes 1.5 hours in total. We chose to combine Eorimok and Yeongsil. It's a good route where you can easily get your heart rate up. The route is not for the walking-impaired, then it becomes too big a challenge. Where the two routes meet, some rest huts have been built. There's also a small noodle shop where you can satisfy your hunger. Remember that you have to carry your own rubbish back down, there are no bins set up anywhere. It's beautiful to sit up in the mountains, eat noodles after a good workout, just relax and gather strength for the descent. The locals are once again dressed according to the latest trends in outdoor gear. It's a sight to behold. You can only be envious of their great gear...maybe a sane Dane will think that some have gone a little overboard :o) It's free to climb Hallasan, you only have to pay for parking if you drive yourself. We took the bus both ways - it's super cheap. In total it only cost 3,500 won per person.
