Asia's largest slum is located in the metropolis of Mumbai. The area is called Dharavi and over 1 million people live here in very modest and squalid conditions. Some parts of Dharavi are better than others, but either way, visiting the slum is an educational experience for both children and adults. On our tour of the slum, we had a local guide who grew up here. He was able to tell many wild stories. In general, it's very safe to visit Dharavi, but it's a must to have a local guide as it's impossible to find your way through the maze-like streets. Our tour takes us to both residential areas, but also to areas with lots of small manufacturing businesses. Everything from soap making, leather production, crafts and metal/iron. Working hours at a soap factory are a minimum of 12-14 hours a day with a maximum of 1-2 days off per month. When you took time off, it was because your body couldn't take it anymore. To save on rent, the production room was converted into sleeping quarters for the employees every night. There were many wild stories... We made a good donation to the organization and are considering further steps. Living in the slums is a completely different life than safe Denmark.
