Markets in Azrou

We took the early bus at 8am to Azrou. A trip of 5 hours and 25 dirhams per ticket. Along the way, the scenery changed drastically. We were used to seeing barren mountains, desert and desolate plains. Suddenly, nature became greener and forests appeared - spruce forests, so it felt like you were driving in the mountains of Norway or Sweden. Market day is a big recurring event every week. In Azrou, market day is on Tuesday and the square is about 1.5 km outside of town. You can easily walk there and back. Otherwise, a taxi should cost 10 dirhams. The stalls at the market offered everything: Second-hand shoes and clothes, kitchenware and machines, live or plucked chickens, piles of vegetables and fruits. The place was a bit like a Moroccan version of the Hjallerup Market. There was everything a Moroccan would need. Not many things that a tourist would buy, but it was fun to walk around and look. We came away with 6 oranges for 3 dirhams and a small bag of roasted almonds for 1 dirham. We've gotten off the traditional tourist route, so people are a little more relaxed about having their pictures taken, although many still say no. The local specialty here is tajine with hare - we have yet to try it.
