Boat Trip in Sumidero Canyon

Right now, we’re sitting here waiting to be picked up. Today, we’re off to Sumidero Canyon (190 pesos per person), which is a massive gorge somewhat like the Grand Canyon in the USA. We’ll be cruising around at the bottom, where the cliff walls rise up to 1 km high. We were given life jackets in case we fell into the river. It would definitely be quite unfortunate if that happened since there are a lot of crocodiles around. We even spotted one that hissed loudly, which they only do when they’re really angry and feel like having a snack. We also passed by some little monkeys playing up in the trees on the cliff walls. Otherwise, we saw the most stunning rock formations that wind and water have shaped over time in the canyon. On the way back, we drove through Chiapa De Corzo, the oldest town in this state of Mexico. We picked up a huge pineapple at the local market for just 12 pesos. Our hostel hosts a free event every day at 7 PM. Tonight, it’s a Mexican cooking class. Unfortunately, the dish we were making was pretty simple and quick, so it didn’t take long. I’ll share the name of the dish later :) There were quite a few of us wanting to taste the dish, so there wasn’t much to go around. Around 8 PM, we headed down to the town, where we found another super cozy restaurant. Tonight’s menu (48 pesos per person) included chicken soup, a Mexican version of lasagna, and ice cream for dessert. We also enjoyed a bottle of wine. Wine is incredibly expensive here, even though they produce a lot of it themselves. A bottle cost 170 pesos… more than the food! We were recommended Revolution, a bar with live bands. There were other tourists there too, so we quickly struck up conversations with fellow backpackers. There are especially a lot of Americans here. It must be nice and wonderfully cheap not to have to travel far to experience a whole different culture and enjoy an affordable vacation. Cocktails, and especially beer, are super cheap, so we probably had a bit more than we should have. We definitely felt that the next day! :)
