Weekend in Portugal

Portugal is just a few hours of flight from Denmark. We chose the town of Faro on the Algarve coast, because Ryanair has a direct flight from Billund, Denmark. Faro is a relatively small city and just perfect for a weekend trip. If you are visiting Portugal for a longer time, then you might want to explore other parts of Portugal because the city has very few attractions and activities to offer. Lisbon is close by so it is a great opportunity to visit the capital. In addition, it is also easy to grab a bus or train to Spain, as Sevilla is not far away. Faro is a small town near the Atlantic Ocean and concist of a new and old part. The city is very easy to explore on foot. The center offers several restaurants and bars - especially seafood are often on the menu. There is also a large shopping mall, Forum, which is packed with shops and restaurants. Just across the road from the shopping mall, there is a great outlet store which has a large selection of shoes for women, men and children. Prices are very low and the quality is excellent. There are a few small islands just ashore from the marina in Faro. Small boats will take you directly from the marina to these islands at a good price. If you are a beach or bird lover, then you do not want to miss out on this opportunity. On a sunny day, an excursion to the islands with fine beaches is a very good choice. We got a slightly longer stay in Portugal than expected, since the cloud of ashes from the Icelandic volcano was making trouble in the Portuguese airspace. All RyanAir flights were canceled, but it turned out that flights to Holland were still scheduled. So we were very lucky that they still had a couple of available seats on the plane to Rotterdam with Transavia. From Rotterdam we took the train to Flensburg in Germany, where another couple invited us to drive with them to Billund, Denmark. The whole trip took us approx. 30 hours.
