Shopping

A shopping day in some of the new shopping centers like the capital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has built.

We’ve decided to stay at the Ghion Hotel for the rest of our vacation. Here, we can lounge by the pool, play tennis, and get massages. We started the day by heading to the Dempel shopping center, where there are tons of jewelry stores. We have this dream of finding an engagement ring. We browsed through all the shops. There are plenty of engagement rings, but the gold here is really yellow. It looks completely off—especially on Honnys’ finger. The ring is way too bright. So unfortunately, we didn’t end up with a ring this time. Instead, we walked all the way to Boston Day Spa for a massage. They also sell DVDs there. Outside, there are quite a few eager sellers, so we managed to buy 10 DVDs for 200 birr. We’ve heard a lot of good things about the burgers at Hilton, so we decided to give them a try for lunch. However, we were a bit disappointed. Compared to other restaurants, Hilton’s burgers are way too expensive and not really anything special. But at least we can say we tried it. When we got back to Ghion, we jumped into the pool. We definitely stood out next to the other guests, who were mostly Black. But it felt great to cool off. We’re trying to adjust our bodies back to Danish time again. Luckily, there’s only a 2-hour difference. We’re trying to go to bed later and wake up later, so the transition will be as smooth as possible when we have to go back to work on Monday. Around 8 PM, we went out for dinner at Ricos, which is located on Bole Road. This is also close to the building where Boston Day Spa is located. In the same building, there’s a trendy bar called Black Rose, where we ended the evening. We get tipsy pretty quickly when we take malaria pills. After sharing a bottle of wine and enjoying a couple of drinks, we usually feel like we’ve had enough :) A drink cost about 40 birr. That’s not much for a Pina Colada or a Daiquiri!
