Simien Mountains Day 2

Simi mountain Ethiopia two days trekking from camp to Gitch Chennek

At 6:30 AM, the sun rises, and that means it’s time for us to get up too. What a cold night we had! We froze and froze. It was really chilly. Honey's glasses were frozen, and there was ice in our water bottles. It felt wonderful to feel the sun’s rays. We were served toast, cheese, jam, peanut butter, Nutella, and oatmeal. What a lovely breakfast! We’re staying at the same camp again tonight, so today’s trekking adventure is in the area. The mountain formations we saw were stunning. There isn’t much vegetation up here; the mountains are barren, but the views over the many peaks are breathtaking. We reached an altitude of 4,200 meters. We had a slight headache starting, but nothing too serious. Lunch was enjoyed in the shade. We had a tuna sandwich. Maybe not the best choice after it had been sitting in the sun for several hours... We were hungry, so we ate it anyway and crossed our fingers that our stomachs would handle it. Paul wasn’t feeling brave. He had already had a bad experience with a tuna sandwich in Ethiopia, so he skipped lunch. In the middle of the afternoon, we made it back to camp. Our cook greeted us with tea, popcorn, and nuts. Oh, that was so needed. We managed to arrange for more sleeping bags so we wouldn’t freeze as much again. Now we were equipped with six sleeping bags—surely that should be enough... Many locals come up to the camp to sell beer or soda. Some just come to watch us. Wow, we really get stared at down here! For dinner, we had lentil soup, chicken, and rice. The chicken was so tough that we had to give up on eating it. The chickens have way too many muscles to taste good. They run around way too much and seem to be having a great time :) Then the campfire was lit, and we warmed up before hopping into bed.
