Siesta in Siem Reap

A visit to the local market in Siem Reap after yesterdays pubcrawl.

Today was all about pure relaxation. We had a bit of a heavy head after yesterday's bar crawl, so we decided it was time for our first chill day of the trip. Siem Reap is a small town where you can walk around to most places. We just hung out in the town today, did a little shopping at the local market, and treated ourselves to an hour-long body massage. It was heavenly, especially since our legs were sore from exploring Angkor Wat yesterday. The people in Cambodia have a different relationship with food than what we're used to. Chickens are tied together by their feet in bundles and transported alive on motorbikes. Little pigs are stuffed into woven baskets, stacked on top of each other on the bike. At every market, there are sections where you can buy food—meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables. It smells wild as you walk by. Women sit at small stalls cutting up meat that’s laid out in the sun until it gets sold. They eat just about anything here. Snakes, spiders, entrails, you name it. We even tried a leg from a tarantula. They didn’t know the name of the spider, but it was huge... Eating out at restaurants is super cheap, especially for Khmer dishes. A main course costs around 3 dollars. The food isn’t overly spicy, which suits our stomachs just fine. Curry soup with chicken, coconut, and rice is often on the menu, and it tastes amazing. The Khmer people themselves eat rice and vegetables every day—but they don’t always get meat. Only about 1% of the population could be considered overweight, and even they aren’t that big!
