Sailing Trip to Colonia, Uruguay

A bit groggy from yesterday’s asado, we managed to get up and head out by 8 AM to catch the ferry to Uruguay at 9. The trip takes three hours on the slow ferry and costs 112 pesos round trip, or 56 pesos one way. The fast ferry only takes an hour but costs 184 pesos, or 92 pesos one way. We were pleasantly surprised by the port terminal and the quality of the ferry. First off, you have to check in just like at an airport. We dropped off our luggage, so we didn’t have to lug it around on the ferry. Then, the ferry itself was really nice and spacious. We were worried we’d be on a tiny boat that would rock the whole way and make us seasick. Instead, we could sit up on the deck and soak up the sun, chill in the restaurants, or relax in airplane-style seats. We opted for the last option so we could catch a bit of sleep. We also did a little tax-free shopping – I snagged a snake-skin bag for 13 dollars. Now we’re staying at Hostelling International right in the middle of the main street in the small town of Colonia, which costs 40 Argentine pesos for a double room, plus free internet and free bike rentals. This town is known for its many historic buildings, so we hopped on bikes to check them out. After a quick stop at the beach to enjoy the view, we cycled around looking for the famous sites. Another cool thing about this town is that you don’t even need to lock your bike; you just leave it wherever. It’s such a remarkably safe place... We can definitely feel that Uruguay isn’t as cheap as Argentina. Food, in particular, is pricier here – but still much cheaper than in Denmark! ;o)
