How We Get the Most from Our Travel Budget

In Marseille, we show how a free shuttle and Uber can offer far better value than the cruise line’s transport.

How to get the most from your travel budget 🌍💸 Excursions arranged by cruise lines are almost always incredibly expensive. Prices ranging from DKK 1,400 to DKK 4,000 per person are not unusual, and for a family of four they are completely beyond our budget. That is why we almost always organise our own excursions. The same applies to drinks packages on board. We have not bought one on this trip, but instead purchase a little wine with dinner. A bottle costs from around DKK 200 upwards. We only choose a drinks package if it can be included in the booking for very little money. Otherwise, it simply does not make financial sense. Cruise ships sometimes dock quite a long way from the city centre. That was also the case today in Marseille in southern France, where the terminal is around eight kilometres from the Old Port. Royal Caribbean offered transport into the city for $25 per person—$100, or about DKK 650, for the four of us. We thought that was ridiculous for a bus ride. Instead, we walked about 500 metres outside the terminal and took a free shuttle bus towards the city. On the way back, we took an Uber for just €11 for all four of us—around DKK 80 instead of DKK 650. Everything we save on things like this can be spent on far more enjoyable experiences. That is something of a motto for us when we travel. We give quite a lot of thought to how we can get the most from our money. When you travel several times a year as we do, the total travel budget becomes substantial, so it is necessary to prioritise. We actually enjoy doing it, too. Finding the best solutions almost becomes a sport—not necessarily the cheapest ones, but those that offer the best value. It is not about saving on everything; it is about spending money on the things that give us the best experiences. The better we use our travel budget, the more we can travel.
