Egypt
Egypt gave us sunshine and the Red Sea in Hurghada, but also the bustle of Cairo and the almost unreal feeling of standing before the pyramids of Giza.
Our first journey to Egypt was a spontaneous package holiday to Hurghada in the autumn of 2004. Within a few hours, we went from Danish autumn weather to warmth, sunshine and life beside the Red Sea. The hotel was unspecified and far from luxurious, but the journey was much more about exploring the country than the room itself. We continued to Cairo and spent three nights in the enormous, hectic city. The greatest moment was seeing the pyramids of Giza – a place we knew from countless photographs, yet one that felt completely different when we stood there ourselves. Back near Hurghada, we also experienced the sea around Sharm El Naga. Eight days was far too little for such a varied country, but the combination of desert, city life, ancient history and the underwater world made Egypt much more than the inexpensive sun holiday it began as.
