We are constantly reminded that Moldova is considered the poorest country in Europe – but it is a place full of contrasts. You can clearly feel it on the roads. We zigzag around countless potholes, and out in the countryside the asphalt often turns into gravel roads in rather questionable condition. At the same time, the difference between city and country is striking – in the cities modern apartments and cafes, and in the countryside small, simple houses, where time seems to stand still. One of the most fascinating things is the many water wells you see everywhere. Many households still depend on them, because running water in the home is not a given. Fun fact: A large part of Moldova’s rural population still does not have access to water directly in the house, and well water is not always completely hygienic – it is often boiled before use. And then comes the contrast… The internet is surprisingly world-class 😄 There is fast WiFi almost everywhere – even in the middle of nowhere. On a hike near Orheiul Vechi we were even able to charge our phone! So yes – in Moldova you can stream Netflix at high speed… but not necessarily take a shower from a tap. That’s perhaps the best description of the country: A slightly odd but truly exciting mix of past and present.
