Arequipa by

After yesterday's city tour, today is a day of leisurely sightseeing in Arequipa, also known as the White City. The area is one of the most inappropriate places in Peru to build a city, as there are "often" earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In 1600, 1687, 1868, 1958, 1960 and most recently in 2001, the city was completely destroyed. Due to the high risk of earthquakes, most buildings are low to provide better stability. Hop on a double-decker bus, sit back and enjoy the city. Or you can experience the city by walking around. Take a break at one of the city's many restaurants - some with a view, others next to the sidewalk where you can observe people and life in Arequipa. Good local food doesn't have to cost a lot. The city is known for the fact that the good food can be found a little away from the Plaza de Armas. We found a tiny little restaurant on a corner in Calle Jerusalen. The chef was standing in the corner by a small gas stove with a lot of bowls of fresh vegetables. Lomo Saltado was only 3.5 S. Lomo Saltado is so popular that the dish is eaten morning, noon and night. The city also has a great selection of museums, churches and monasteries to quench your cultural thirst.
