Vatican City is a city-state in Rome, Italy. The Catholic Pope lives here. The Vatican City is also the world's smallest state at 44.2 hectares and is one of the last states in Europe without democracy. The Vatican became an independent state in 1929 and is ruled by the Pope. Inside the walls live the approximately 1,000 people who fulfil the functions of the Vatican. There is a post office, shops, a radio station broadcasting in more than 20 languages, a newspaper (l'Osservatore Romano), many offices, museums and a book publishing house.
